Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II

The National Monument in Piazza Venezia

Almost every lookout point in Rome will offer you a view of the huge Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II. Designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and completed in 1911, it was erected to preserve the memory of Italy's first king Victor Emmanuel II and the Italian unification of 1870. The 70 metres high, 135 metres wide and 130 metres deep memorial can be seen from across the city and is located just off the Piazza Venezia, one of the busiest intersections in the city. At the end of the wide stairway is the altar of the homeland, in whose centre the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is situated. The altar is overlooked by a massive bronze statue of King Victor Emmanuel on horseback.

Inside, the Museo Central del Risorgimento has information on the history and unity of Italy from the 18th Century until the First World War. For a fee you can take a lift from the roof terrace to the roof of the monument where you have a magnificent view over Rome.
