Early Christian Church in Rome

According to legend, Saint Peter lived in the house of senator Pudens during his time in Rome and converted the senator as well as his two daughters Praxedis and Pudentiana to Christianity. Pope Siricius therefore built the Basilica of Santa Pudenziana over the old Roman house. Although the church was rebuilt and enlarged several times, the apse and its magnificent mosaics have been preserved. The monumental mosaic in the apse dates from the 4th Century and shows Christ with his 12 Apostles and the Holy Praxedis and Pudentiana outside of Jerusalem. In the sky over Jerusalem, the late classical gems-cross and the four symbols of the evangelists - angel, lion, bull and eagle – can be seen.
