Town above the Lago di Nemi
The small town of Nemi is located on a crater protrusion about 100 metres above Lake Nemi. Just off Piazza Umberto I is the Renaissance castle of the Ruspoli family. The entire site including the surrounding lands once belonged to that family. Today, the castle is still privately owned and can therefore not be visited. Also worth visiting are the Chapel of the Crucifix and the church of Santa Maria Assunta with a major triptych from the 15th Century. You should not miss a brief stop at one of the cafes along the promenade. From here you can enjoy a magnificent view of the lake and, on a clear day, even of the sea.
The Lago di Nemi
The Lago di Nemi is a small volcanic lake in the Alban Hills about 18 kilometres southeast of Rome. Even though the lake itself is not suitable for swimming and reeds grow on its banks, you can still rent boats for a boat trip. In the fertile region around the lake, fruits and vegetables are grown, including strawberries, which are known for their flavour. In the ancient world, the complete area around the lake belonged to the Shrine of Diana Nemorense, the goddess of the hunt, who – according to legend - checked her beauty on the lake surface during full moon nights.
