Collezione Peggy Guggenheim

Palace and residence of Peggy Guggenheim

The Palazzo Venier dei Leoni was the residence of Peggy Guggenheim in Venice from 1949 until her death in 1979. The famous American art patron was lovingly often called “the last Doge of Venice” by the Venetians. The palace, which dates from the 18th century, takes its name from the lions’ heads which are located on the facade at the height of the water table. The property also contains the last resting place of Peggy Guggenheim herself, next to the graves of her dogs.

After her death she bequeathed her property in Venice, including the works of art, to the Solomon Guggenheim Foundation in New York. However, she decreed that all art works remain in Venice and be accessible to the public. Nowadays you can therefore admire works by famous artists such as Chagall, Picasso, Kandinsky, Ernst, Pollock, Duchamp and Dali.
