Rimini's ancient centre
Piazza Tre Martiri is located directly above the ancient Forum Romanum, where the two Romain main roads, Decumanus Maximus and Cardo Maximus, used to cross. The erstwhile Piazza delle Erbe formed the centre of Rimini up to medieval times. The Piazza was given its present-day name in memory of three partisans (martyrs) who were executed here (Mario Cappelli, Luigi Nicolò, Adelio Pagliarani).
The beautiful city square suffered heavy damage in World War II and was largely reconstructed. A historic clock tower and the octagonal temple church San Antonio are situated around the square. Julius Caesar allegedly delivered a speech to his soldiers after crossing the Rubicon – a statue commemorates this moment.
