Roman house at Piazza Ferrari
The archaeological excavation site Domus del Chirurgo is situated in the middle of Piazza Ferrari. The House of the Surgeon can be found in the northern excavation area. It forms the main part of the excavations with its beautiful floor mosaics and is an excellent example for a Roman house from the 2nd century AD. The house got its name because of the discovery of approx. 150 medical and surgical tools that currently are on display in the city museum. The excavations suggest that the house presumably belonged to a Greek military surgeon and burned down in the 3rd century after the inroad of German tribes.
The south part of Domus del Chirurgo hosts remains of a Late Antiquity palace. Still perfectly visible is the long courtyard with channels and magnificent mosaics. The round hall was presumably used as an entrance hall. After the decay of the palace the area was used as a small Christian graveyard in the Early Middle Ages. Some of the graves can still be seen.
