The inconspicuous Chiesa San Tomaso church is located right next to the Ponte Nuovo del Popolo. The church was built in the 15th century on the foundations of two previous churches and was inaugurated in 1504. The choir wall in the interior was designed by the famous architect Sanmicheli, who is also buried in the Chiesa San Tomaso. The grave of Sanmicheli is in front of the second altar on the right-hand side.
In 1769 the 13-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave an organ recital in the church. He left behind his initials “WSM” (Wolfgang Salisburgensis Mozart) in the wooden pews of the organ. Unfortunately, the organ is not open to the public, which means that the initials can’t be viewed. The church itself is still used very extensively, and attempts have been made to make the church services less boring for the children – in front of Sanmicheli’s grave there is a small sitting area with pens and paper for drawing and painting.
