Biblioteca Capitolare

Oldest library in the world in Verona

The Biblioteca Capitolare is one of the world’s oldest libraries and was established in around 517 A.D. as a writing workshop for the cathedral. The massive collection of 75,000 books, manuscripts, codices, parchments and pieces of music is unique. Among the library’s valuable pieces are three very important documents: the “Gospel Purpureum” from the 5th Century, an issue of the “Divine Comedy” by Dante and the “De civitate Dei” by St. Augustine. Even the manuscripts of the Roman philosopher Cicero can be found in the collection of the Biblioteca Capitolare.

The chapter library in Verona is unfortunately not open to the public and can only be viewed by making an appointment in advance. Interested visitors should make an appointment and visit this stunning collection.
