Villa Foscari “La Malcontenta”

Palladian villa on the Brenta Canal

The Villa Foscari is the only real Palladian villa on the Riviera del Brenta. It was designed by the master himself in 1560 for the brothers Nicolò and Alvise Foscari, both members of the Venetian Doge family. It is a gigantic square complex with an ionic portico. In the main hall and adjoining rooms there are frescoes by Battista Franco. The villa received the epithet “La Malcontenta” (The Discontent) because a member of the Doge family was forced to live here from time to time in order to restrain her lust for life.
