Famous opera house in Catania

Right in the Piazza Bellini stands the Teatro Massimo Bellini - one of the most beautiful opera houses in Italy. It was designed by the architect Andrea Scala in the Neo-Renaissance style. The outer façade is inspired by the Biblioteca Marciana by Jacopo Sansovino in Venice. The magnificent theatre offers space for 1,200 spectators and was opened on the 31st of May, 1890, with Vincenzo Bellini's opera "Norma". Since then, nearly all the works of Bellini have been performed regularly in Catania.
