Randazzo Medieval old town

Pretty little town on the northern slopes of Mount Etna

Randazzo is located on the northern slope of Mount Etna and was built on an ancient layer of lava. Although it is only 15 kilometres away from the main crater of Mount Etna, the small town was largely spared from major eruptions of the volcano. A stroll through the medieval centre is particularly pleasant. Since there were 3 Christian communities (Latin, Greek and Lombard) in Randazzo until the 16th Century, you can still admire three beautiful houses of worship in the centre.

The Roman Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria was built from lava stones in the 13th Century. The huge apses, doorways and windows are in Gothic-Catalan style. The Greek Church of San Nicolò dates from the 14th Century. Inside you will find sculptures by Antonello and Giacomo Gagini and a triptych from the 15th Century. Opposite the church rises the Palazzo Finocchiaro from the 16th Century, which is a perfect example of the transition from Gothic to Renaissance style. The Lombard Chiesa di San Martino finally stands out with an elegant campanile. With a marble baptismal font from 1447, a crucifix from 1546 in the right apse and a marble tabernacle from the 15th Century in the left apse, you can admire some beautiful medieval monuments.
