Wine town on the south-western slopes of Mount Etna
Adrano is located on the southwest slope of Mount Etna on a lava terrace and is an important centre of wine and citrus cultivation in Sicily. The name of the town Adrano, which was called Aderno until 1929, comes from the ancient Sicel dog god Adranos. In the centre there are the remains of a Norman castle, built by Roger I on the ruins of a Saracen fort. The rectangular building houses an archaeological museum and a small chapel with the remains of beautiful frescoes. Another impressive sight is the adjacent Chiesa Madre, whose three ships are separated by 16 massive lava columns.
Ponte Saraceni, a medieval bridge over the Simeto, is located 6 miles northwest. While difficult to access, it is still an interesting sight.
