Verucchio

Cradle of the Malatesta

Verucchio rises on the first rock cliffs of the Marecchia valley and is traditionally labelled cradle of the Malatesta family. This is where Malatesta da Verucchio was born, considered to be the founder of the noble dynasty and mentioned in Dante's "Divine Comedy". Here the Malatesta unleashed their power, which eventually led them to Rimini and to become rulers of the whole province. A strong fortress protected the breeding ground of the noble dynasty even after the relocation of the reigning powers contributing enormously to the growth of this little town.

Sights in Verucchio

Verucchio’s highlight is, of course, the 12th century Rocca Malatestiana, to this day one of the largest and at the same time best-preserved Malatesta fortifications. Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta expanded the fortress to today’s size in 1449. A little walk through the medieval city centre leads to the Romantic-Gothic 10th century parish church, the archaeological museum with a wooden throne and to the oldest Franciscan monastery of the Romagna from the 13th century. One of the masterpieces of Rimini’s art school – a crucifixion scene – is worth seeing inside the monastery.
