Ravenna and its sights

A vast array of different cultures has left their mark on Ravenna over the course of centuries and millennia. Above all, evidence of the era of the Ostrogoths under Theoderic the Great is still visible all over the city. Ravenna is particularly famous for its mosaics. The oldest mosaics date back to the time of the Roman regent Galla Placidia, while later mosaics show clear traces of Ostrogoth influence. Some were effaced by later regents due to Arian depictions. The UNESCO declared eight Ravennese buildings – seven buildings featuring mosaics and Theoderic’s tomb, which was made from massive lime stone – World Heritage Site in 1996.

Trip to the hinterland

History also plays a decisive role in Ravenna's surroundings. Russi is home to one of the region's largest archaeological excavation sites on which a Roman country house was found now giving interesting insights into the mode of life at that time. The influence of the Este family, who once ruled Ferrara, can be felt as far as Sant'Alberto and as such to the closer surroundings of Ravenna. Faenza became world-renowned as the hometown of the faience ceramics.
