Cento

Centre of art in the southwest

Cento, which is located 35 km southwest of Ferrara, was once ruled by the bishops of Bologna before Pope Alexander VI bestowed the city upon Alfonso d’Este as dowry for his wife Lucrezia Borgia. Cento flourished in the 17th and 18th century as a textile town specialised in the processing of hemp. Piazza Guercino, named after the baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (also known as Guercino, in English "the squinter"), forms the centre of Cento. Guercino’s paintings are exhibited at the Pinacoteca Civica. The noble Palazzo Governatore accommodates the Galleria d’Arte Moderna. This gallery of modern art features works of Cento’s own expressionist painter Aroldo Bonzagni.
