The Hochabteiltal – Alta Badia

Skiing and hiking paradise in the Dolomites

The Hochabteital, usually known by its Italian name Alta Badia, is certainly one of the most popular valleys of the Dolomites. There are rock suites and magnificent peaks of the Puez mountain range, the Sella mountain and the imposing Sass Songher and, in between, green meadows, pastures and forests. Especially in recent years there has been a lot of construction in the villages of Kolfuschg (Colfosco), Corvara and Stern (La Villa) turning them into real hotel towns. Hotels, inns and restaurants are spreading everywhere out of the ground. The level and quality of accommodation is very upscale and the prices are very high. However, the beauty of the valley still justifies a stay: green meadows and hiking trails as far as the eye can see. As for the mountains, mountaineers will be enthused with the climbing routes and peaks. During the winter, spectacular ski slopes run down into the valley from all the surrounding mountains: a paradise for all sports and nature lovers.

Corvara und Kolfuschg

Directly under the Sass Songher mountain you will find the village of Corvara, one of the main tourist resorts of the Alta Badia valley. Unfortunately there is little to see from the old village core. Modern hotels and restaurants dominate the townscape. There are good tourist deals whose quality is reflected in the prices. Accordingly, the place is a very popular holiday destination in season. Corvara itself is not spectacular – the old church with its altar is well worth a short visit. The nature around the village, however, is much more interesting and there is much more to see and do there.

The small village of Kolfuschg (Colfosco) is situated 1650 metres above sea level and offers a beautiful, sunny view of the Sella massif. Until the late 19th century this place was completely cut off from the outside world and accessible only via a narrow footpath. Today’s roads were built between 1901 and 1970. As in the nearby Corvara, there are also many good hotels in Colfosco and the surrounding landscape has many attractions and natural beauties. Also worth seeing in the city is the late Gothic church of St. Virgil, with its pointed arch windows and the Baroque onion dome.

Sella mountain range and Puez group

The Sella Group is by far one of the most famous mountain ranges of the Dolomites. Going around on foot, by motorcycle, car or on skis is one of the highlights for many tourists. The beautiful mountain range, with the Piz Boe (3152 m) as the highest point, is located in the Ladin area and is the source of almost all Ladin valleys of the Dolomites. The beautiful karst landscape is a paradise for climbers and mountaineers. Hikers and walkers can reach the high plateau by cable car from Corvara or from the Pordoi pass.

Directly above Corvara rises the imposing Sass Songher (2665 m), the southern foothill of the Puez mountain range with its beautiful, vast plateau. The wonderful hiking area on the plateau can be reached by cable car from Colfosco.

The Pralongia

One of the most popular and famous ski and hiking areas in the Dolomites is without a doubt the Pralongia between the mountain Piz La Ila and the Pralongia crest. On the most famous downhill run of Alta Badia, the Gran Risa, Alberto Tomba celebrated a total of 8 victories. In the summer, the region turns into a popular family hiking region. Numerous huts, meadows and harmless mountain pastures as well as many bodies of water are ideal for hiking for families with children.
