The Tierser Valley

Wild Dolomites canyon in the Rosengarten

The Tierser Valley (German: Tiersertal) is one of the wildest gorges in the Dolomites with steep Dolomite walls, beautiful natural scenery and only a few inhabited areas. The principal town of Tiers is the only proper town in the valley. Until a few years ago even Tiers was only connected with the outside world by a narrow road. Today, hotels, pensions and restaurants decorate the town and tourists enjoy the benefits of a well-located town. But it is not only the excellent sports facilities in the Rosengarten mountain range which attract tourists – the gorgeous nature in particular and the largely unspoilt rural traditions are a very special attraction.

Attractions in Tiers and its surroundings

In Tiers itself, there is little to see. From the Weißlahnbad district a small trail leads to the plague chapel to St. Sebastian. The small chapel in the middle of a forest glade was built in 1635 after a plague that killed 124 people in Tiers – the place was almost unpopulated after that. In Weißlahnbad rheumatism sufferers have been receiving relief since time immemorial. In the spa facilities of many hotels you can get access to the healing and slightly radioactive water.

In any case, it is recommended that you take a trip along the Niger Pass road (Via Nigra), which is among the most spectacular high alpine roads. It leads along the walls of the Rosengarten and offers enough opportunities for hiking and skiing.
