The Eggental Valley
Sporting centre of the Rosengarten
The Eggental, with its principal town Welschnofen, is the sport and tourist centre of the Rosengarten area. As one of the first and now busiest sections of the world-famous Dolomites road, the Eggental Valley begins at Bolzano and runs eastward between the Rosengarten and the Latemar mountain ranges to the Karersee see. From the Karerpass you can reach the Fassa Valley in Trentino. The Eggental Valley and its side valleys offer excellent sports facilities and also a good tourist infrastructure. A magnificent mountain scenery with beautiful lakes, forests and meadows perfect for hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, mountain biking and skiing. With the ski resorts Obereggen-Latemar and Nova Levante-Carezza, the valley also has two ski areas that leave nothing to be desired.
Welschnofen, the centre of the Eggental, offers less to see but attracts more due to its perfect location at the foot of the Rosengarten. In just a few minutes’ drive from here you can reach both the Nova Levante-Carezza ski area, as well as the Obereggen-Latemar ski area. In the summer, hikers, climbers and mountain bikers use the small town as a starting point for tours through the surrounding mountains. What is interesting, not only for history lovers, is a long walk on the Elizabeth promenade. The promenade runs along the exact path that the Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) took on the way to her holiday destination, the Karersee Grand Hotel. A memorial reminds us of the presence of the Empress. A panoramic view of the Rosengarten and Latemar compensate for the 2 ½ hour walk.
A few kilometres further east of Welschnofen at the upper end of the Eggental is the Karersee lake. It is a magnificent sight surrounded by dense green forests and whose waters reflect the broken crags of the Latemar. Unfortunately, the lake is accessible only in a few places for reasons of protection and you have to share the small space for a good photo with many other tourists – the view and the location still make it worth a visit!
