Musei Civici agli Eremitani and Chiesa degli Eremitani

Collection of paintings and church

Right next to the Cappella degli Scrovegni is the Chiesa degli Eremitani with its adjoining beautiful cloister. The church itself dates from the Middle Ages and was completely destroyed during World War II. Although the church with its beautiful wooden ceiling and the numerous monuments was rebuilt, the vast majority of the splendid frescoes by Mantegna was lost. Remains of the frescoes are preserved in the chapel to the left of the apse. Otherwise, the church is relatively bare, and aside from an exhibition of war damages and reconstruction offers little worth seeing.

Via the beautiful cloister, you can reach the Museum Civic agli Eremitani. Here is the archaeological museum with many exhibits from the Roman period of Padua. There is also an Egyptian exhibition with pieces from the collection of Padua explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni. In the museum of modern and medieval art, approximately 3000 paintings from the Middle Ages to modern times are on display. Among them are works by Titian, Giotto, Tintoretto, Veronese, Tiepolo and Giorgione.
