Garrison town near the Villa Casale
Piazza Armerina is traversed briefly by most of the visitors on their way to the nearby Villa del Casale, but it offers a worthwhile destination for a short break. The relatively young city was not founded until 1080 by the Normans and served as a garrison town to monitor the Saracen settlements. Piazza Armerina has been the seat of a bishop since 1817.
The main sights worth seeing in the city centre include the Cathedral Santissima Assunta, which towers on a hill overlooking the city and can be seen from a distance. The baroque church contains a bi-painted cross by Maestro della Croce di Piazza Armerina, a baptistery of Gagini and a valuable silver altar with a Byzantine Icon "Madonna delle Vittorie" in the church treasury. Also worth a visit is the Palazzo Trigona on the Cathedral Square and the churches of St. Ignatius, St. John and the Church of Gran Priorato dei Santo Stefano with beautiful frescoes and various architectural styles.
