Gateway to the Antholz Valley
The village of Rasun-Anterselva (Rasen-Antholz) consists of two districts: Lower Rasun and Upper Rasun. The latter is the historically important district because the ruins of the castle Neurasen are located here. It was the home of the former rulers of the valley and it is situated imposingly over the village. Also worth seeing is the Ansitz (stately residence) Heufler, a Renaissance building from the 16th century with turrets and bay windows. Three floors, a square corner with diagonally placed towers and oriels in the front – surely one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in South Tyrol. Today this beautiful building is a hotel.
Surroundings in the Antholz Valley
Further up the valley you reach the villages Antholz Obertal, Antholz Mitteltal and Antholz Untertal. From Antholz Mittertal, scenic walks lead up to the alm pastures Grentealm and Kumpfleralm, where you can stop in at one of the mountain huts. Before you reach the Staller Sattel and the Austrian border, Lake Antholz spreads below the pass. Under Austrian rule the lake was called Untersee (lower lake) – similar to the Obersee (upper lake) on the Staller Sattel – but was renamed Lake Antholz after annexation by Italy. The magnificent view of the surrounding mountains is worth a short walk around the lake (takes about one hour).
