Monsélice

Sanctuary in the Euganean hills

Picturesquely situated on the southern edge of the Euganean hills is the small town of Monsélice. The town became famous primarily through the pilgrimage shrine Sette Chiese – 6 chapels and a church, which run up a mountain slope to the big Villa Duodo. From the central Piazza Mazzini, with its medieval Torre Civica, it goes uphill via the Via al Santuario towards the Villa Duodo. The quite strenuous pilgrimage leads to many beautifully decorated villas, the Castle Ca'Marcello and the Cathedral of Monsélice (Duomo Vecchio), wonderful places you should visit.

Shortly after the cathedral you reach the gateway to the huge park of the Villa Duodo. This upward leading road is lined with six chapels open to the front and ends at the Chiesa di San Giorgio. The villa Duodo is unfortunately not open to the public. On Sunday afternoons in spring and autumn, however, you can go from the villa uphill to the fortress and visit the city walls, including the tower (Mastio Federiciano).
