Montagnana

Medieval gem in the Euganean hills

Montagnana is a medieval gem west of Este. Its perfectly preserved city fortifications with a 2-km-long city wall, 24 towers and 4 gates are among the finest in Europe. In the 13th century the town, like many other cities in the region, was burned down by Ezzelino da Romano, but then fully restored with the medieval fortifications perfectly intact even today.

Within the walls you should take a leisurely walk through town and enjoy the unique flair of the town. In the imposing Gothic cathedral along with numerous valuable paintings and frescoes an old choir stall can be found. The altarpiece "Transfiguration of Christ" is by Veronese. The Castello di San Zeno guards the eastern gate and houses the Museo Civico, which houses exhibits from the Roman and prehistoric era. Just outside the eastern city gate there is the Villa Pisani – a villa built according to Palladio's plans, which is not open for the public.

If you’re hungry you should visit the neighbouring town of Montagnana, Bevilacqua, where you can eat very well in the beautifully restored Castello di Bevilacqua.
