Palazzo della Provincia

Neo-Romantic provincial palace

The provincial palace Palazzo della Provincia was built by the Piacenza-based architect Giulio Ulisse Arata between 1925 and 1928. It was constructed on the grounds of the former Palazzo Rasponi, which has since been relocated to the Piazza del Popolo. The old palace, which had been used as a patrician house and, ultimately, as a hotel during its final years, was destroyed during a fire in 1922. The only parts remaining of the original building are the crypt and the roof passage. The palace itself was built in neo-Romantic style with Byzantine elements featuring an eclectic mix of styles that exemplifies Ravenna's history.

Crypt and hanging gardens

Members of the Rasponi family were supposed to find eternal peace inside Cripta Rasponi. Among the most fascinating features of this small, three-part funerary chapel is the 6th century mosaic floor adorned with animal glaze figurines that were originally located inside the San Severo Church in Classe. The hanging part of the gardens of the old Palazzo leads to the Piazza San Francesco and a terrace that used to connect the palace with the stables and repositories.
