Former church of Arianism

After the Byzantine Empire had defeated the Ostrogoths, Arianism, the former Ostrogoth state religion under Theoderic the Great, was forbidden. Arian houses of prayer were rebuilt accordingly including the Santo Spirito, which had already been used by a Catholic cult in the 6th century. The modifications caused the loss of the grand mosaic decoration. However, the imposing spatial impression still makes this building popular with tourists looking to explore the Renaissance portal and the 14 pillars with Byzantine capitals and imposts. Santo Spirito currently serves as an orthodox church.
