Palazzo Schifanoia

Magnificent diversion from monotony at court

Among the highlights of every trip to Ferrara is the Palazzo Schifanoia ("schivar la noia", literally "escape from boredom"). This city palace commissioned by Alberto V d’Este in 1385 is exclusively dedicated to entertainment and offered the regent the option to get away from the monotonous sadness of life at court. Borso d’Este had another storey added to the brick building in 1468. The marble portal designed by Francesco del Cossa was built two years later.

The Sala dei Mesi ("Hall of the Months") is home to grand, sadly poorly preserved month frescoes from early Renaissance dating back to Cosmè Tura’s students del Cossa and Ercole de Roberti. The preserved frescos of the months of March and September depict gods, humans, mythological scenes, and scenes of the everyday life of ordinary people and from Borso’s court. He is portrayed as a kind and wise ruler.
