World’s longest arcade footpath

666 arches spread across 3.8 km lead from Porta Saragozza to the pilgrimage church Basilica Santuario della Madonna di San Luca on a hill outside Bologna. Taking the world’s longest arcade footpath with its many steps is an adventure in its own right. Arriving on top of the hill, the grand view of Bologna and the Apennines is reward enough for courageous hikers. A highly esteemed Marian icon rests inside the 18th century church. It is part of an annual ceremonial procession every Assumption week during which the icon is carried downhill from the basilica into the city.
