City walk through Taormina

Comfortable walking tour to the most beautiful places of Taormina

Due to its exposed location, outstanding attractions and the surrounding beaches, Taormina is a popular destination for tourists from around the world. No wonder masses of tourists crowd the streets in summer. However, you must make sure to go on a short walking tour through Taormina. Apart from Taormina's most famous landmark, the Greek Theatre, the picturesque old town with its many viewpoints is worth a visit.

Short city walk through Taormina

The picturesque old town of Taormina is best explored on a short walk. Depending on the season and the number of tourists, you should plan at least 2 to 3 hours for the walk to see all the attractions and stroll through the shops, nice bars and restaurants. If possible, you should park at one of the large car parks at the entrance roads as the centre has narrow streets and parking spaces are very limited.

  • We start our short city walk through Taormina at the Porta Messina and first go to the Odeon, a small Roman theatre.
  • From here it is only a few steps to the Palazzo Corvaia, one of Taormina’s most important palaces.
  • Now follow the Via Teatro Greco to the main attraction of the town, the Greek Theatre, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area as well as the historic ambience.
  • From the Greek Theatre, return to the Palazzo Corvaia and follow Taormina’s most important road, the Corso Umberto I. Along the Corso are all the other major attractions.
  • Passing by numerous palaces and pretty lanes, you will finally reach the Piazza IX. Aprile. The picturesque piazza is one of the busiest centres of the town and offers lots of fun, a unique atmosphere and a fabulous view.
  • Continue along the Corso Umberto I. and you will reach the Cathedral Square with the cathedral of San Nicola and the beautiful baroque fountain after just a few metres.
  • The tour ends up on the opposite side of the town, at the Porta Catania, the oldest gate of Taormina.

If you have more time to spare, you can now climb up to the Castello Saraceno, visit some other attraction or simply stroll leisurely back along the Corso Umberto and enjoy the atmosphere of the town. In the countless narrow streets there are also many nice restaurants and cafes that invite you to linger.
