City palace of the Borghese family
Like any powerful family in Rome, the Borghese represented not only a pope, but also had many properties within and outside the city. The Palazzo Borghese was the city palace of the family - the summer residence was tge Villa Borghese north of the Piazza del Popolo - and was built by Cardinal Camillo Borghese, who later became Pope Paul V. The superb palace was completed in 1614 and received the nickname “Cembalo” because of its ground plan. The magnificent interior, including two beautiful courtyards with arcades and garden, know to impress. In the Palazzo Borghese temporary exhibitions take place today.
